It's been an amazing week of Community, Collaboration and Choice at Origins of Peace
Not only did we have an amazing Mind Body & Spirit Self-Care Event, we also
volunteered with The Elizabeth House Foundation at one of their amazing Community Breast Screening events. The marvelous work being done by Brandy Sims and her team allowed 16 women to receive breast cancer screenings. This effort was held at Dove's Nest Charlotte. Some of the women were receiving their first mammogram, and of course there were many questions and concerns about what to expect. As a survivor, I understand the trepidation that comes along with that first screening. I was honored to stand in the gap and offer support as the ladies made their way to the mobile unit to be screened.
I am glad that I made the choice to connect and volunteer!
The Elizabeth House Foundation helps underserved minorities in underrepresented communities receive access to healthcare. Visit Elizabeth House Foundation to learn more about this great cause.
There's a Lot Going on Right Now
The political climate is hot, police brutality is still happening, and the everyday struggles of life are going strong. During this time, it's extremely important for you to take time for yourself. There's only so much bad news and grief that your nervous system can handle before it becomes overloaded.
Here are three things that you can do for yourself that will help you make space to breathe.
.
Tip #1 - Visualize & Journal
I like to combine vision boards and journaling to create a vision mining experience. Combining these two practices allows you to visualize your true desires, create obtainable goals and then document your progression toward those goals. It's an extremely creative experience allowing you the freedom to dream out loud, think big and expand your capacity for growth. Channeling your thoughts away from trouble and challenge takes practice. This is one method that allows you to do this while also helping you to create a strategic plan for forward progression.
Tip #2 - Make Noise
I always keep a song or tune in my heart. I like to hum, I love to whistle and when I'm alone, I blast the radio and SING OUT LOUD. These are self-soothing techniques that come in handy when life is really trying to get the best of you. I also love to use my drums, sound bowls and shakers. Do whatever it takes to break up the staleness of stagnate energy. Start with a simple tune that you can hum, and pretty soon you will get the hang of it.
There's a post that I shared on my LinkedIn page by Char Newton that talks about protecting your mind in the current political climate. She provides really great tips, and it only takes a minute to read, check it out here.
Tip #3 - Get a Coach
Although you want to get through hardships and challenges on your own, it's simply tough to do when you're trying to fill all the roles.
You are the client, coach, therapist, spiritual advisor, healer and it's just too much. You're not gaining any traction because your perspective and capacity to see more in the situation is limited to your purview.
Coaches are important because they help you:
Clarify goals and identifying obstacles.
Create strategies for overcoming obstacles.
Provide support and encouragement.
Help with personal and professional development.
Assist in self-discovery and understanding.
